What a user agent can and can’t tell you
A user agent is a claim the client makes about itself. The parser reports that claim faithfully and marks the gaps.
Read from the string
- Browser name and version
- Rendering engine, such as Blink, WebKit or Gecko
- Operating system family, and sometimes its version
- Device class: desktop, mobile or tablet
- The crawler a bot claims to be
Not knowable from the string
- Whether the string is genuine. Any client can send any string.
- The real OS version on current Chrome, Edge and Safari, which freeze it.
- The device model on Android. Chrome now sends “K”.
- Whether a crawler is who it says. That needs an IP check.
- Anything about the person using the browser.

Search, social and AI crawlers are recognised by signature and always labelled as unverified.

Chromium browsers expose structured hints. Basic ones are shown; detailed ones are only requested when you ask.
Questions
What is a user agent?
A user agent is a string a browser or other client sends to identify itself when it requests a page. It usually hints at the browser, rendering engine, operating system and device class.
How do I find my user agent?
This page reads it for you. Your own browser is parsed as soon as the page loads, and the Raw string tab shows the exact value your browser reports.
Can a user agent identify a device exactly?
Not reliably. Browsers now reduce or freeze parts of the string, and anyone can change it. Treat the result as an interpretation of what the string claims.
Can I verify Googlebot from a user agent?
No. A string that says Googlebot is only a claim. To verify a crawler, check the request’s source IP using the search engine’s documented process, such as Google’s guide to verifying Googlebot.
What are User-Agent Client Hints?
Client Hints are a newer, structured way for Chromium browsers to share browser and platform details. Basic hints are available by default; more detailed values must be requested explicitly.
Where does my user agent go?
Nowhere. Parsing happens in this browser tab. Pasted strings and browser diagnostics are not sent to a parsing server, analytics or a database.
